Smith family papers, 1723-1841.

Primarily deeds, leases, estate settlements, and wills related to a Lyme, Connecticut, family, and records of the town of Lyme. Of particular interest is the divorce agreement between Elisha and Deliverance Kimball Smith in 1803 in which Deliverance is allowed to keep the property she brought to the marriage. Seth Smith's name appears on numerous documents as he held several town offices including Justice of the Peace, tax collector, constable and school treasurer. Seth settled the estate of Sarah Alsop, whom he and his family had cared for at the end of her life. Seth and Elisha Smith were also active in the militia. Other Smith family members included in the collection are Andrew, Benjamin, Jason, Enoch and Stephen. Area families whose papers can be found in the collection are Alsop, Beckwith and Miller. In the town documents are records of the care for the poor, particularly young boys, and some tax documents. In the unofficial town records is a document relating to the bankruptcy of the Farmers Exchange Bank of Gloucester, Rhode Island, to which is attached a three dollar bill. In the papers that were not attributable to the Smith family is lease in which Mary and Hannah Murdock will rent their land to Thomas Harby, a refugee from Long Island, and a petition requesting the boundary of Glastonbury be re-established because of the change in course of the Connecticut River.
